  • Eggnog

My grandma used to make eggnog.  Every year.  (Non-alcoholic because she was a very strict Southern Baptist who didn't believe in the cardinal sins of drinking, gambling or dancing.)  I was an adult before I tasted "store-bought" eggnog.

Grandma never measured anything.  She put in "enough".  I think I've come close to her recipe.

    8 large eggs
    1.5 c sugar
    2 c heavy whipping cream
    4 c half and half
    1 T vanilla
    1 t rum extract
    1 t nutmeg

In a blender combine the eggs and sugar.  Mix until smooth and beginning to be a little fluffy, add heavy whipping cream and continue to mix until foamy.  Then slowly add the half and half, finally add vanilla, extract, and nutmeg.

Grandma served it straight up.  If you are squeamish about the idea that there are raw eggs involved, pour the entire mixture into a large saucepan.  Over Med-Lo heat, while stirring, slowly bring the mixture to 160*F and maintain temp for 5 minutes to pasteurize.  (It takes a long time to do this, but you can't heat it any faster or you will have custard instead of eggnog.)

  • I think i just gained 10 lbs reading the recipe!

    HEHE!

    Sounds very tasty!

  • Mmmmmm eggnog!

  • I think it's more than being squeamish with fear of salmonella in raw eggs (you know it's chronic and for keeps and can flare at any time after contracting it?)  I have a friend who makes it and lets it heat until it thickens just a lil until it's slightly custardy... I like that.  Of your g'ma's beliefs, that would be my g'ma and my mom too... I have a friend who describes it as "don't drink, smoke or chew or date girls that do" LOL!

  • No disrespect to your Grandma or your eggnog...but.....let's just say....not I'm a fan of the schtuff.

I think I see why some thought it a good idea to add alcohol to the nog.

  • bleck... i don't care for it at all, but i'm glad you had such a restful weekend after your week. we'll make plans again after the holidays, ok? :)

  • Oh I don't like egg nog maybe I should heat mine I love custard. Judi

  • mmmmmmmm
    sounds most excellently tasty.

  • Oh thank you for the recipe! Many years ago I ventured into the World of Homemade Eggnog. The recipe I had was from an English Christmas cookbook and was complicated and took forfreakingever to make. It was by far the best eggnog I've ever EVER tasted. Alas, the book vanished and I reverted to store bought eggnog. I've been searching out recipes this year because I really want to try homemade again (along with plum pudding and a couple of other things I shouldn't be investigating.) I'll let you know how it turns out.

Glad you rested up. You really don't need any extra stress. Take care of yourself.

  • Thanks for those expensive flowers!  I wish I would have had that kind of mini cash to spend on your eruption of awesome mini!

  • That sound reeeeeeeeally good :)

  • Oooh, cool!  We've been haunting the grocery store, waiting for the next shipment of "good" eggnog (ie, cheap but good-tasting).  I might just have to whip this up.
