  • Off to a Good Start ...

Well, I kind of slept in this morning.  As in I didn't get my lazy behind out of bed until the last possible moment.  I set my alarm last night, but I didn't turn it on, so I slept right through the two hour "window" i had planned to use for my NaNo writing.  BUT, thanks to the fact that my boss went home early this afternoon, I was able to settle in and partially make up for that lost time.

As of now, my word count stands at 3,297.  It's still short of my goal for the day, and I'm gonna try to add another 100 or so words before I go to bed, but I'm getting a little bit brain dead at this point.

My favorite bit of writing so far today is from a scene where my main character is explaining the small town grapevine to her new neighbor ...

    “You
haven’t asked me why I’m moving to Magnolia.”

    “Don’t have
to.  Either you’ll tell me or you won’t
    but Magnolia’s a small place.  I’ll know
before tomorrow whether I want to or not.”

    “Seriously?  How does that work?”

    “Miss
Emma is a friend of my momma.  In fact
they are in a Bible study group that meets on Thursday evenings.  Tonight it’s at Clyda Mae’s house, which
means they will be having cherry dump cake and whipped cream.  Before they start the Bible study they will
have prayer requests.  Emma will say how
she has this new tenant from California, nice young fellow, and she will tell
them your age and marital status.  Then
she’ll ask for prayer that you find a good welcome in our community.

    “Momma
will take notes.  She’ll think about it
all during the bible study because she’ll have to decide whether it’s okay to
tell me about a younger man.  But as soon
as it’s over she’ll call me and tell me that I need to keep an eye out because
    there’s a stranger in town.  That’s
Momma’s way of using reverse psychology to get me interested.  I’ll thank her for the warning and then I’ll
go back to watching CSI.  Because if I argue with her about my need for a man in my life, or tell her how I’m not really interested in younger men, I’ll miss the part where Grissom gets to say something cryptic
to Greg and really I live for that part of the show. “

    As she
spoke a slow smile spread across Rick’s face.
“Dude, your mom sounds like she’s off the chain.  No one could be that predictable.”

    No?  Well, maybe not."
