  • Monday Musings

Well, it seems that all of Mommy's distraction over the past couple of weeks has led to a particularly unpleasant happening.  I've discovered that my children are slacking in their schoolwork and their chores.    I know that it's not fair to come down hard on them, because if I had been doing my due diligence they would never have gotten so far behind.  Unfortunately, no matter who's fault it is - THEY have to make up the work.  So it's turning into a LONG day for them.

I got my cholesterol report back.  It's higher than it's been before - but at 198 - I'm still two magical points below the line where the doctor feels free to make hurtful comments about beef for dinner.    I guess it's time to break out the oatmeal.  You know, with the weather getting cooler I ALMOST don't mind the thought of oatmeal.  Almost.  I kind of like it in oatmeal cookies, but just oatmeal in a bowl for breakfast?  Ugh.  Okay, that would be true of almost anything I tried to have to breakfast.  I know what all the Mom's of the world (including me) say to their kids about the importance of breakfast - but I rarely eat anything in the morning.  I can deal with a cup of tea, and that's about it.  I used to feel guilty about my lack of diligence about breakfast, but now that Michael knows how to make omelets and pancakes, I figure if they want hot food they have options

Did you have a good weekend?  We did.  Got some yardwork done.  Went out and did some shopping.  One thing I haven't done is get the dog a bath - eeewwwww!  How a five pound dog can get water all over a 9 x 12 room is beyond me.

I got my brother hooked on George R R Martin's Fire and Ice series when he was here.  He called last night to tell me that he's plotting a suitable revenge upon my soul because he can't stand it that he's going to have to wait a couple months for Feast of Crows.  I'd probably have more sympathy if I hadn't been waiting a YEAR for that book myself.  Speaking of my brother - I'm very proud of him.  He came in late - just got out of the army and missed the hiring process for teachers last Spring, but he has a job.  He's going to be teaching Math while he works on his Masters.  Way to go, Dave!  I'm a capable math student, it's not my favorite subject because I don't much care for the tedium of following all those steps.  It's so inflexible!  But Dave has been able to show me things that get me excited about math.  So I figure he'll do great  teaching.

Speaking of teaching and teachers, I had a lovely phone chat with one of my favorite teachers yesterday.  The lovely Daffodilious is doing well - up to her earlobes in honor's students and wackiness.  And yes - I am rubbing it in a little that I got to talk to her.  Gosh - where DID that mean streak come from?

Must be cause it's a Monday.  I hope yours is going well.

  • It was a Football/sports like weekend - so not too bad all around Except our teams lost LOL I hope you have a great day!

  • I like that.......if they want hot food they have options.  Here's what my kids do with their options   :hammer:

    Happy Monday!   :innocent:

  • Sounds good!......

  • WTG, Dave!  And I'm rofl'ing here about your guilt trip for forcing your kids to buckle down.  It's their responsibility too, after all.

(oatmeal is much more palatable with a bit of brown sugar sprinkled in, I've noticed )

  • "I got my cholesterol report back."

It's not what you eat that's bad for you--it's what's eating you.

  • My kids are also being slackers with schoolwork and chores... not like I'm the best role model for the latter.

I'm so not a math person-- so I am really impressed by people who can not only DO math-- but also TEACH it.

(& I really miss reading the lovely Mizz Daff...)

  • "I LIVE with a person who says the kind of things you quoted in the last part."

Sometimes even the people who love us need to be whacked upside the head a little.

  •  :smack!: hee hee hee - I smacked you!

     :lip_kiss: look - I smacked you again!

  • Oatmeal.  Yum!!!  (too bad I can't put all the good stuff in it like the husband does, but I really like it for breakfast).  I have found that exercise does better things for my cholesterol, which isn't very bad at all.

Hubby and I discussed the family thing this morning, approaching the school year as a team.

  • I used to hate to eat breakfast until I read Pamela Smith who talked about the importance of eating breakfat, giving the analogy of stoking your fire in the morning. Adding a little chopped apple and cinnamon or craisins (and a bit of honey, not sugar) makes a big diff in the way I feel about eating it.

  • ugh oatmeal.

  • My kids are doing great with their studies, but the chores are another issue.  I get a lot of "sure, I'll help you with the yard but it means I won't be able to read those 400 pages I've been assigned......."

  • My oldest is the king of slacker when mommy is not paying attention. I have to really come down hard on him throughout the week. It is good to see that my children are not the only ones struggling with this issue. Thanks for sharing that.

I have had my cholesterol checked on several occasions and it comes down a few points each time. I find listening to Mozart (taking time to destress), daily exercise (also stress release and good for my health and waistline at the same time) and cutting my fat and eating whole grains help a great deal. I get my oatmeal about four times a week - it is something I enjoy eating so this change was an easy one for me. You might try some of the flavored instant packets or mix your own. You can find some of these at the Oatmeal Zone. The exercise and cutting fat were the hardest changes for me.

    Blessings,

    ~Leann

  • I know what you mean about oatmeal..shew... :nanana:

    Have a great week!

  • As a student who's been behind on schoolwork it's a lot easier if they just do it. After awhile they'll be almost done or halfway or something, and they'll feel better about it. And you shouldn't feel guilty, it's their work. They shouldn't need you to hold their hand and tell them exactly what to do (although my brother seems to need that of my mom *sigh*)

  • Did you ask what the levels of HDL's and LDL's were. That's more important than just the count. You can have a high colesterol count, but if the levels are right it doesn't matter much. Its been a while since bio class, but I think as long as you have more HDL's than LDL's you could have a 250 count and not have to worry about it. Ask your Doc, he should know! (most of them won't tell you unless you ask, its kinda stupid)

  • Lovely

  • Oh! I think my kids dodging their school work is one thing that can really get my blood boiling. I'm sure

     :nanana:

^^^ this is what they see on days like that.

(Love all your fun e-moticons here for our picking. )

  • Yep. Had a good Monday, thankyouverymuch. Mike.

P.S. I'm going to try to make this page load even more slowly. Ready?   :hammer: :waaahh: :innocent:  :femmeblnd: :bigbounce: :clown: :hammer: :2beers:

  • I 'm so fat and into bingeing right now (and I so wish I wasn't) that a bowl of oatmeal wouldn't be enough. I'd need two, with honey, raisins and lots of milk. And then regret it all day.  I think I teach my kid the wrong signals about food even though I try not too.

  • math?  math + Lucky =  :frustrated:

  • Well I see you have had quite a few comments here re Cholesterol. Sorry I am behind in getting to here to comment.
This is something we too are trying to bring into control. Lot's of studying. HDL(polyunsaturates and monosaturated fats, which actually are good and bring down Cholesterol build up) and LDL (saturated fats and Trans  fats or Hydrogenated fats which are bad) levels are the ones to look at. From what I understand anything between 180-220 is good, below or above that is bad. The HDL should be 3-4 times higher than the LDL.
