April Showers
I know that the cycle of seasons existed before I moved to the country, so I don't understand hwo it is that I never noticed before. When I lived in the city I was insulated against cold and rain, hot and humid by airconditioning, a schedule of activities performed mostly indoors, and the reliability of utilities that service the suburbs. Here, where I live more of my day outside than in for much of the year, I'm suddenly for the first time in my life at the mercy of stormfronts, dry spells, and other routine seasonal events.
My telephone service, never wonderful, becomes maddening during the Spring rains. Lines that I never noticed at any other home, are carefully gaurded against damp. But not matter the care, sooner or later, I pick up the phone and find I have no dial tone. I call the phone company on my cell phone and am told, once again that there is nothing they can do. It's an old issue.
For the past two weeks it has been my mission to mow the grass around my house. Just when I think I'm going to complete the job, we have another rain, and then I have to wait two days before I can resume the project. After this week, my flowerbed has weeds almost as tall as the rosebushes. The pond has become murky with the red clay that washes into it. The area out back, as large as a standard city lot, is still uncut.
I really miss the goats.

We are having the same grass mowing challenges. It is amazing how something that lays rather dormant all winter suddenly becomes impassioned with growth in the spring! This is the wettest spring we have had in years!
Augh, it snowed here today! It's all wet and mushy and gross outside, and it's still coming down! I'd kill for an April shower right now to get rid of this!
I think we'll get to mow this weekend. I'm all aflutter. <<- insert sarcasm at will.
We had phone issues two years ago. We (the people on our block) finally called the phone company and told them that when they got it fixed, we'd start paying our bills again. It was fixed within the week. Heh. The power of the consumer.
I need goats, would beat mowing for sure!
Ahhh that makes me think of my grandparents farm in Northern California - we used to play with the goats LOL
they have seasons up there too, unlike down here where its summer most of the time!
i so know that sight you just described..the land behind here is 25 acres..there is one man made pond out front a good 25 feet or more long and no more than knee deep to a 6 foot man yet its filled to the brink and the two nature made ponds in various parts of the property that normally run dry are full..the grass is growing sporadically all the trees are budding...and my oh my those weeds think they own the place..ive been hostage in the house for days today was the first day i could get out
i potted the herb seeds, am replanting my sunflower seedlings and have re organized the play room and all of my craft stuff its amazing what a day of sunshine can do...but i really love the country
even with the crappy phone service and muddy dirt roads

I'm a city girl as much as I love nature. I grew up in the country and learned enough to know that the city is where I should be.
Goats are fun little animals though. What happened to yours?
Can't you have more goats if you have moved to the country. Sounds an ideallic life in the wilds, Although more like hard work Cheers Portia

I wouldn't change living closer to nature for all the city amenities in all the cities in the world. I can remember when I used to live in a city apartment. I would take the elevator down to the parking lot, drive in heated or cooled car to another parking lot downtown where I would take another elevator to the place I worked. I swear I could have gone days without ever getting an honest breath of air.
Now I am outside almost more than I am inside and life is much, much better.
I try to mimimize my lawn to as small a portion of my property as is possible. I find too often what makes a good lawn is the most destructive on those birds and animals that often frequent my property. So if it is a choice between their well being and the welfare of my artificial lawn, it is no contest. Screw the lawn.

Ditch the lawn, grow wildflowers?
Seriously, the country is probably a huge pain, but the endless pointless grind of the suburbs is pretty miserable...
You mean you miss the goats at your friend's house in Southern Ohio? You mean you want to run away for the weekend again?
yeah... goats or maybe a cow or two
I grew up in the foothills of Appalachia (in southeastern Ohio on the WV border). I know how it is to lose the phone whenever it rains!!! It stinks.
But I miss home very much....and I am glad I only live 2 hours away!
