    Real Men Take Baths

Okay, I get it that the Middle Ages weren't as sanitary as I'd like.  I get that soldiers in the field didn't get (or want) to take baths often.  But, I have this to say about the hygiene exhibited by the characters in Lord of the Rings - GROSS!

I'm sorry, I know I was supposed to be watching the fantastic cinematography, (that opening shot alone should get them some kind of award), hanging onto the dialogue, and awed by the epic battle.  But, all I could think was, Dang!  Can't they at least wash their HANDS before they EAT!  Even when they are sitting RIGHT BESIDE A STREAM close-ups show the filthiest fingernails I've seen since Braveheart.

Then I read what people are saying about Orlando Bloom as Legolas and I wonder if we saw the same movie.  I can't get over his action shots, the economy of motion as he fires arrow after arrow, the smooth stride as he runs across the open field, and the focused energy of a warrior in battle that enables him to do his job AND look out for what's happening with the other characters (did anyone else notice that at one point or another he saved everyone else's bacon, he didn't make a big deal out of it either, just whacked orcs and urukai like it was his standard exercise routine? AND, not once did he even so much as roll his elven eyes over Aragorn's grandstanding.)

But, the most manly thing he does in the whole movie is admit that he's wrong.  I know how hard that is to do.  I'm not wrong often, but when I am, it's almost as hard as giving up a kidney to admit it.  He made it look so easy!  I'm going to buy the Two Towers DVD as soon as it's released.  There's never been any question about that.  But for that one scene alone, I may have to buy a new widesceen, digital, plasma, surround sound home theater system.

So all to those people who've been making fun of Legolas for being "pretty," I say go right ahead.  I recognize a real man when I see him, and I'm inviting him over for quiche.

  • That's funny you thought about hygiene!

  • See I kind of liked the dirt, thought it gave a real realistic look. LOL  All I know is that movie KNOCKED MY SOCKS OFF!! I very rarely really love a movie but this one had it all. What was there not to love? And Legolas can be my bitch anyday!

  • I thought the dirt added to the realisim too.  You obviously don't have teenaged boys or you'd be used to that.

  • I can't wait to see these movies (yeah -- haven't seen either of them yet; how SAD is THAT??).  And -- uh -- I'm glad you haven't (yet) had an opportunity to examine my kids' fingernails........

  • you're wrong -- a good stank is sexy!

  • Faith, now I have to invite you here.  It's perfect.  Here's my friend who hasn't seen EITHER of the movies.  We HAVE to get that big screen tv for her . . .

  • I'm still having trouble with that text scrolling script you gave me.  I can't seem to get it to work...where exactly in the skin script do you place it?  Like, in the section, or right before , or what?  Also, the last part, "scrollText(0)", shows in my weblog wherever I put the script, but that's all that shows up.

Am I making any sense?? *lol*  Help please!!!!!!

  • ROFL! I used to say, when the quiche thing came out, that REAL men have hair on the BOTTOMS of their feet! ROFLMBO!!!!

  • I haven't seen the second one yet but I don't think I would push Legolas away if he wanted to nibble my quiche!!!

  •   Ah, the movies!  There's nothing like the movies!

  • ROFL, that's just great.

  • LOL I have to agree with you...and he can have quice at my house anytime too!

  • I'll have him over for fondue when you're done with him. :0)

    Feithy

  • LOL, FUNNY! AND IF YOU SEE A REAL MAN ,OH WELL NEVER MIND LOL!

  • Uh, who's paying attention to THAT when there's so much else going on?....

  • Knocks on door with a second quiche'.  I love this!! And the scene where Legolas pretty much jumps on his horse from a standing in front of him position.. I love that move. And you know? I noticed the fingernails too LOL!

  • Gee, my daughters wouldn't like hearing those remarks about Orlando!  o/

    God Bless - Dale

  • LOL.. My fav is still Aragorn.  Anyday, anytime.  Ohyeah.

  • lol...yeah, you're right now that I think about it...can't remember them taking any baths, except when the weird troll/goblin/creature jumps into the forbidden pond and nearly is murdered for it.  I guess about as clean as they got was having wine spilled on their clothes.  Anyway, I certainly haven't seen anyone making fun of Legolas...for one thing, Orlando Bloom is gorgeous, and if you thought he was hot with blond hair, you should see him with his natural hair color and a short hair cut.  Also, his character was amazing--he had a sense of humor, remained sexy as all hell after riding in a saddle all day, and could pick off an enemy at 100 paces with his bow and arrow!  YUM!

By the way, unfortunately Legolas will have to decline your invitation for quiche, as he will be otherwise occupied IN MY BED for the rest of the...week

  • Wench
    Function: noun
Etymology: Middle English wenche, short for wenchel child, from Old English wencel; akin to Old High German wankOn to totter, waver and probably to Old High German winchan to stagger -- more at WINK
    Date: 14th century
    1 a : a young woman : Girl b : a female servant
    2 : a lewd woman : Prostitute

Isn't he an elf anyway and not a man? Elves are supposed to be pretty.

  • nice... lovely blog

  • Aragorn's greasy hair bugged me; I kept wanting to dip him.  I'm with you; I'll take that sexy elf.  I hope Kevin Sorbo (Hercules) won't be too upset

  • LMAO I loved the first line!! have agreat day!!

  • You can show Faith when you show me--I own the dvd of Lord of the Rings and still haven't watched it.  And maybe the action does something for the man, because that is definitely a girly-looking man, man!

  • He is an Elf, right?

  • How dare you accuse Aragorn of grandstanding??? And elf-boy there is conspicuously absent any female love-interest... why is that, we wonder... hmmm?

(just kidding. Legolas is okay... if that's the type you go for. hahahahahah)

  • Orlando Bloom in full Legolas get-up is beautiful, I don't care what anybody says!  Have you seen him sans long blond wig, makeup and blue contact lenses?  In the shots I saw he was actually kinda fugly, LOL.

  • Oh, Myki, it's easy to say why Legolas is missing a love interest.  Tolkien didn't know about me and my elf inclinations.

  • How in the world could anyone criticize that lovely, lovely man?  So he's pretty.  I like pretty.  He's pretty and efficient, like you said.  And emotionally-stable.  If I can't get that in real life, why shouldn't I fantasize about it?

But you know, I like grubby, too.  If it weren't for all the women already fighting over him, I'd grab me an Aragorn any day.

  • You know, I don't think - actually I haven't seen so many eprops and comments on a site! Whew! Lucky you hehehe

Many blessings, and thank you for the kind gesture of visiting me & leaving a few props & comment. I do so love the Full text of the Serenity Prayer, it is so comforting!

  • Umm.... Terri, that was makeup, LOL!  Jes kiddin'  If you see the making of the movie on the extended DVD of Fellowship of the Ring then you might not mind the dirt so much... the way the cast talked about the filiming at Helm's Deep it's amazing that they survived (3 mos. filming at night in winter and the rain--which they said was cold--was real!  They all got really depressed.)

I really enjoyed the flick and Legolas (who IMHO, plays the part of an elf perfectly.)  As far as Orlando?  I hardly recognized him IRL.  He has brown hair and eyes... not blue eyes and blonde hair.  I understand part of his movements (like the sequential launching of arrows) were digitally imaged--he could not possibly have gotten the arrows off as quickly as the sequqnce demanded.  I ramble on, but I think this is one sharp piece of cinematography!

  • LOL!!!!  I noticed that too.. but it did add that realistic manly man thing!!! LOL!!!  Shoot.. I would faint if my hubbys hands were clean all the time!!!  He is a man that works with his hands... so.. never know what you might find!!! lol!!! Hugs... hum.. going to find my wench!!! lol.. Rose

  • 1 i think it did add a gritty feel to the movie, but it was distracting, too.

2 huh? we're supposed to bathe?

  • Only you...girl...only you...would think of it...LOL

But seriously....they would have been criticized if he had clean nails...it wouldn't have been realistic enough....as for me....as long as they clean them before they eat at my table...it is ok..

  • I'm told that in the times of "Lord of the Rings" that baths were literally non existant, unless you fell in the river.  But of course, they covered up body odor with scented oils...yuck.

  • Just stopping back by to look at that gorgeous pic again.  Sigh....!  I read an interview by Mr. Bloom the other day and he said something to the effect that he made sure all of Legolas' movements were lithe and catlike and seemingly effortless....I think he pulled it off pretty well.

And the guy was born in Canterbury, England.  You know I've got a real big soft spot for Englishmen

  • You sure did describe him right!  The way he moves, he never complains, he saves everyone... oh my.  And pretty, too.  I've always kinda been partial to pretty men.  I love Johnny Depp, too.  heh  Legolas is so amazing!  I wish they'd give him more acting parts, though.  Hopefully, in the next movie.

And what's not sexy about an elf?    I love them ears!

  •   Lots of comments here. I have not seen this movie yet, but it is now on our Super Channel, and Exlog will be taping it. So you have given me some things to take particular notice of.

  • just make sure he takes off his shoes in your house, eh?

  • ...I guess I'm not the only one who likes that Elf ...I can even do my hair like he has done his...I also noticed that everybody looks kinda not-having-bathed-for-the-past-6-months except for Legolas...

  • Loved this! But quiche?  The collector's DVD set has all the edited-out scenes too! Wow.
