  • Did you ever play Moonopoly with little kids?  A 5 year old and an 8 year old.  Did you ever try to explain the concept of value to a child who wants to give his brother Pennsylvania Avenue (giving his brother a Monopoly on the greens) in exchange for St. Charles Place (no Monoploy in sight there) because he likes that color better.

Did you ever come back from the bathroom to find that they had decided that they should be allowed to have big red "barns" on their property because they are country kids, and everyone knows that country kids put up barns on their property?

Did you ever REALLY wish that your husband would come home from that business trip because you told the kids that if you had to play one more round of Candyland you were going to scream things that would make them need therapy NOW so they picked Monopoly instead?

    Well, did you?

(PS - I never liked Monopoly to begin with.  Why oh why couldn't my kids be interested in playing Risk!  Risk is fun.  In Risk, I marshal all my forces and approach my neighbors with truth and light.  When they respond to my ideas and political plans - they convert to my color.  No death - no destruction.  Just happy little people.  Lots and lots of happy little people.)

  • Okay, I think maybe our kids were switched--I should have yours and you should have mine--those Risk mongers that I have!  Sheesh!  All they want to do is play Risk, Risk, Risk.  The older one has ruined the younger one--now she's a Risk-a-holic, too.  I'd rather play Monopoly any day that Risk.  Yuck-pooey!   You should buy Monopoly Junior.  It's loads of fun and a much quicker game.  Saves your sanity.  Just throw that Candyland in the trash.  Play the, "I wonder what happend to that game" trick.

  • I kinda like Monopoly, myself...maybe you ought to switch to the British edition - with Waterworks, Pall Mall, Coventry Street, Old Kent Road, Park Lane, Pentonville Prison, etc. (I'd better stop here before I name the whole board.)

We bought the Britsh game from England a while ago now...but we haven't got around to playing it yet.

  • I'm with you... Monopoly sucks.  I mean, only the little Alex Keatons of the world like that game, right?  geez!  Ok, ok... so not only have I never won at the game, but I have never finished a game.  You're a saint, oh Queen of Candyland....

  • No monopoly yet...

  • I just got another good reason not to!

    :) )

  • Ah I am so thanful none of my kids had the attention span necessary to even darknen the doors of a full game of monopoly.  If they made a version for surfers they might try.  I have children with the attention spans of a flea so games are somethign they dont tolerate well.

as for all the other questions...the answers for me would be yes, yes and more yes..

    good blog

  • What do you mean no death and destruction?  I remember you wiping my lil green guys off the board with your "Yellow Jaundice" invasion.  I think you have a highly selective memory.

  • Monotony? Ugh! Give me a game of Yatzee or Scrabble or even the Pet Shop game my youngest is so fond of - just don't bring out the Monopoly set! How about Hangman?

The favorite of all the games my older kids had was Mastermind. It was cool. Twister is fun, too, though this old body isn't as nimble as it used to be.

  •  I used to play Monopoly ALL the time when my kids were younger. UGH... I think I would go bonkers if I had to play with kids 8 and 5.

You must have the patience of a Saint dear!

  • hahaha..at least those kids were willing to share..

  • YOu are a brave mommy!    I salute you!   I wont play monopoly with my kids.. LOL... Most other games, but not that one..

  • Monopoly is faster with a computer.  Makes all the difference in the world.

Besides, when you play agains the computer, you don't feel guilty as much when you totally destroy the other players and then drag out the game as long as possible, collecting rent month after month after blessed month...

Ahh.... just like the real word

  • OH MY GOODNESS!  I am laffin' wid you here!  This is one reason why I am SURE God gave kids TWO parents--to divide the insanity among them!  Playing games with younger children is sometimes such MADNESS!  (I don't like Monopoly either... let's rename it MoNoToNY!!! )

Go for a ride in the car to a park and enjoy the weather or something... change their scenery and yours!  Proclaim a mental health day!  Hope the fresh air does you good!  Hang on girlie!

  • actually i think it's kinda sweet...your kids giving away their property and setting up "barns".  my friend and I used to start a game of Monopoly up at the beginning of summer at my family's cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks and we'd play all summer.  Hint: it's easier if you take out the 'pay taxes' cards and...oh, dang...there's one other one to get rid of, too.

personally, i think there's a special place in hell for the game Chutes and Ladders.  Dang cheatin' game.

  • I enjoyed your previous blog on freedom. Now I get to smile at this one - brings back a few memories! My children just loved the game, but my son was way too agressive, and no-one could beat him. My youngest daughter loved her candy land, and still has it - she even plays it with her little ones now.

  • We don't even own Monopoly.  My kids like to play Mousetrap and Sorry.  Fun to play with the little ones when they make up the rules as they go!  I can totally relate to that one.

  • We used to play Monopoly Jr. with the kiddos.

    God Bless - Dale
